Vijay Eswaran has become famous in Asia’s business world for building a company that has overcome tremendous odds to become a direct selling and small business financing powerhouse. The company is QIGroup and Eswaran told some of the unheard story of its founding to Entrepreneur.com. Read more: Five Minutes With Dr. Vijay Eswaran, Executive Chairman, QI Group
The company was founded without a lot of capital backing because much of the Asian banking industry was unwilling to lend to startups during this rough economic time. But he managed to bring the funds from other sales jobs he did and with his dedication as well as that of his associates, Eswaran was able to get things started.
Another difficulty for Vijay Eswaran was dealing with shareholders who falsely accused him of bad business practices, but he was able to have the case dismissed in a court hearing. He’s had to work to change public perception about what multilevel marketing is, but his generosity through the foundations he supports has helped this endeavor. Eswaran does have the stories of people who became a part of the QI Group’s independent business owner team that have been able to change their lives through the business opportunity.
Vijay Eswaran’s childhood shaped what he would do as a man, and it was his father’s saying of “service above self” that always stayed with him. He became interested in the science of business and social work, so he studied the socioeconomic field when he was a student at the London School of Economics.
He undertook several manual labor jobs during this time that included cab driving and grape harvesting. He also went to the London CIMA program and then completed his master’s degree at Southern Illinois University. He founded QI Group in 1998 and started out with QNet in the numismatics direct selling business, but he’s since diversified the company’s ecommerce into cosmetics, health foods and other lifestyle products.
Eswaran has reached out to needy communities through RYTHM Foundation and the Vijayratnam Foundation, named for his father.
He’s also a spiritualist who has a lot of advice for using spiritualism in the workplace, and that can be found in his books “In The Sphere Of Silence” and “In The Thinking Zone.” Eswaran’s awards include the New Global Indian award of the Global Indian Meet in 2012, and an award for business leadership at the World Economic Forum.
