The Lacey and Larking Frontera Fund Collaborates with The Phoenix Legal Action Network to Offer Legal Assistance to Immigrants

The Phoenix Legal Action Network is a collective of lawyers that is committed and dedicated to providing, increasing and improving pro bono legal services to low-income members of the community as well as community-based organizations which are committed to advancing social justice in the entire Phoenix Area of Arizona.

The network serves as a link between community members and organizations and legal attorneys looking to offer their pro bono legal services. To achieve this, they work in close collaboration with the community organizations to understand their legal needs and take measures to recruit pro bono attorneys who can meet their legal needs.

They also seek out lawyers looking to offer free services and serve them with the appropriate training as well as the right opportunities to provide their services. Larkin and Lacey also stand in as a platform where initiatives are explored, developed and launched that serve to fill the significant gaps in legal services within the community.

There are almost one million foreign born persons in Arizona, which represents one in seven of every person in Arizona. Of these, 325,000 are undocumented, which about the general population is 40% higher than the national average.

Having an attorney has been proven to bear the potential to be five times more able to prevent a non-detained immigrant from deportation than going to court without one.

Despite this fact, and despite the large immigrant community in Arizona, especially in Maricopa County, there are still no organizations committed to offering free legal services for non-detained immigrants as well as those facing deportations. There are also very few resources available to immigrants in the state to seek legal recourse.

They often face the complex American legal system without legal representation, often suffering dire consequences as a result. The need for the provision of elaborate legal assistant for immigrant populations has been increased by the harsh conditions created by the recent Executive Orders cracking down on immigration under the new political administration.

It is against this backdrop that the Phoenix Legal Action Network started the Justice for Immigrants and Families Project. This project is planned to have one managing attorney, one legal staff and two post-graduate fellows to offer legal solutions to immigrants and the families affected by these new immigration rules. The JIFP project has received funding from the Lacey and Larking Frontera Fund and is bound to carry out its operations over the next three years.

The Lacey and Larking Frontera Fund was founded in 2012 by two journalists Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin from the proceedings of a settlement made with the Maricopa County. This followed their unlawful detention by Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio in 2007.

The two were apprehended from their residences in the midst of the night after they exposed the corruption and abuse of power by the County Sheriff’s office.

Although they were later released after a public outcry following their unlawful arrest, they initiated a case against the Maricopa County for abuse of their human rights. Their case would be determined in 2012 as they were awarded a 3.75 million dollar settlement. These are the proceedings that they used to start the Lacey and Larking Frontera Fund.

George Soros is no stranger to the Public. Most people know him as the rich billionaire with ties to politics as a chief financier of most democratic affiliations. He is a wall street powerhouse and the owner of Soros Fund Management which is one of the most profitable organizations in New York. Soros billions can be traced back to when he migrated to the United States in the early 60´s and set up a Hedge fund. His accumulation of wealth is due to his apt knowledge in trading in securities and this is what propelled him to riches. His notable trade was when he traded in the British pound through arbitrage and generated lots of profit that set a foundation for his growth in the securities trade.

He has established Open Society Foundations in over 70 countries around the globe. The aim of these centers is to promote democratic processes, Social equality and protection of basic human rights. This number of centers is very huge and is very noble of a man who has dedicated his riches to promoting human rights and better policy relations with countries in less developed countries. Thee Open Society Foundations have made tremendous progress in providing the much needed funding for non profit groups and human rights activists.

In the political sector Soros contribution is well known. He has funded some of the most progressive and democratic individuals including the former president of the United States Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. His interest in politics is due to the fact that it’s easier to fund sober political campaigns that advocate for promotion of human rights and protection of democratic processes. In some of his political anecdotes, Soros claimed that Terrorism occurred as a result of America’s poor foreign policy on other countries. Its lack of commitment to redistribution of wealth and financial aid to less developed countries was a major cause of strained relationships which resulted in acts of terrorism. Soros put across that it was important to promote international assistance to countries that lacked the capacity and the best way to do that was funding democratic campaigns.

Waiakea Water is Giving Back to Communities Around the World

In 2014, there were 650 million individuals without clean water and 2.3 billion without basic sanitation. Sub-Saharan Africa accounts for 37% of these affected individuals. Waiakea water formed a partnership with Pump Aid due to their interest in Malawi. Their water consumption is staggeringly low. The people are living in poverty with dirty water a large factor in their mortality rate. Waiakea works with the members of the community to locate the best sites for the installation of the Elephant Pump. This is an award winning pump used by Pump Aid and teams dig a well, assemble the pump, and teach the people the skills they require for maintenance.

Waiakea makes certain the needs of the villages are met and monitors and evaluates the progress. There are now 1.35 million individuals with safe water and sanitation due to Pump Aid and Waiakea. Over 4,000 pumps have been installed in Malawi. More children are attending school, less individuals are suffering illnesses from dirty water, and malnutrition has dropped. Waiakea is changing lives and plans to expand in the sub-Saharan Africa region during the next couple of years.

When you look at all the brands of water available in the stores you must take the pH scale into account. The acidity can be a low as four and go as high as seven. When the pH level is seven the water is neutral. The highest pH levels come from water that is naturally alkaline. The water will act as an antioxidant and the electrons present will remove free radicals that flow through a bodies veins. Waiakea water is naturally alkaline with a pH of 8.8 placing it high on the scale and making it incredibly healthy and beneficial to drink.

Waiakea does a lot more than produce fresh and clean water. Their philanthropic efforts have helped impoverished communities in Africa by donating water. Currently there have been 650 liters donated to the communities in rural Africa who were in desperate need. They have saved 1.35 million individuals from drinking potentially deadly water. Due to the efforts and care of Waiakea over 500 million liters of water have been given to the areas and people who needed it the most and they are not even close to finished.
